Hi, I'm Jacob Selman, the educator, coach, and creator behind The Nerdy Coach. For nearly two decades, I have worked with students, families, athletes, and teachers to help make learning more clear, more engaging, and more meaningful.
My work brings together the best parts of who I am: teaching, coaching, creativity, technology, and a genuine passion for helping students grow in confidence.

I created The Nerdy Coach because I believe students need more than just answers. They need support, structure, encouragement, and someone who knows how to break difficult skills into steps that make sense.
As an educator and coach, I have spent my career helping students build confidence in the classroom and beyond. Whether I am working with a student on math skills, helping an athlete grow through practice and discipline, or creating resources for teachers and families, my goal is always the same: help people move forward with confidence.
The "coach" part of The Nerdy Coach is intentional. I believe learning takes practice, feedback, patience, and belief. Every student deserves someone in their corner.
My Background
Education, athletics, technology, and real student needs.
My career has included work in math, science, special education, academic intervention, instructional technology, and athletics. I have worked with middle school and high school students across a wide range of learning needs, confidence levels, and academic goals.
That experience has shaped the way I teach. I know that students do not all learn the same way, and I believe strong instruction should be clear, flexible, encouraging, and practical. Some students need skills broken down step by step. Some need help building study habits and organization. Others need a challenge that pushes them to the next level.
My coaching background has also played a major role in my approach. Coaching has taught me the value of preparation, repetition, feedback, teamwork, resilience, and confidence. Those same principles show up in every tutoring session, resource, workbook, and learning experience I create.

Students often struggle not because they cannot learn, but because they have not yet been shown the concept in a way that connects. My approach focuses on breaking down difficult skills, building confidence early, and helping students develop strategies they can actually use.
I want students to understand that making mistakes is part of learning. The goal is not just to get through the assignment. The goal is to build the habits, confidence, and problem-solving skills that carry over into the next challenge.

Why I Created The Nerdy Coach
Meaningful learning can still be engaging.
The Nerdy Coach was created from a simple idea: learning resources should be both meaningful and engaging.
I wanted to build a brand that combined education, coaching, creativity, and technology in a way that could serve students, families, and teachers. Families need support they can trust. Students need instruction that makes sense. Teachers need resources that are practical, polished, and ready to use.
The Nerdy Coach is my way of bringing those things together.
Whether I am helping a student prepare for Algebra, guiding a learner through test prep, creating a workbook, designing a math camp, or building resources for teachers, my goal is to make learning feel more approachable, more organized, and more empowering.
